Architecture competition

As a school, the Bauhaus has always been a place for new ideas with an international outlook. As a school, the Bauhaus has always been a place for new ideas with an international outlook. The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation has therefore organised an open, international call for entries for the architecture competition for the new Bauhaus Museum, which is scheduled to open in time for the Bauhaus centenary in 2019.

831 offices from all over the world submitted designs to the competition. In the first of two phases, the competition jury selected 30 of these submissions for the second phase. In the final jury sitting on 3 September 2015 they subsequently awarded two first prizes, one third prize and one fourth prize, with a further three being highly commended.

Subsequent to the negotiation period with the two first-placed offices, Young & Ayata of New York, USA and Gonzalez Hinz Zabala of Barcelona, Spain, on 16 December 2016 the commission for the construction of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau was awarded to the Spanish office Gonzalez Hinz Zabala.

With the open, international call for entries, it has been possible to involve numerous architecture offices worldwide in the discourse concerning the challenge of building a museum for the Bauhaus as a unique school of design. Furthermore, entirely in the spirit of the Bauhaus, the competition has created an opportunity for a young, unknown architecture office.

The effective date for the start of construction is 4 December 2016, the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus in Dessau. Claudia Perren looks forward to the new museum: “The Bauhaus in Dessau once again gains a wholly characteristic and new quality with the museum designed by Gonzales Hinz Zabala, in that the building pursues the design vocabulary of modernism and, thanks to its materiality and flexibility, will function very well as an exhibition venue.“
