Exhibition: Craft becomes Modern. The Bauhaus in the Making.
Hammering, planing, sawing and weaving – it was pretty loud and dusty in the workshop wing of the School of Design, the Bauhaus Dessau. Although conceived as ‘laboratories for industry’, a great deal was still done by hand in the Dessau workshops.
The exhibition ‘Craft becomes Modern. The Bauhaus in the Making’ in the original setting, the weaving workshop in the Bauhaus building in Dessau, tells the story of the workshops from the perspective of craft. In the microcosm of workshop praxis, the exhibition shows the prevailing wide-ranging field of conflict in which craft at the Bauhaus was redefined as a utopia, albeit one that coexisted with industrial culture.

exhibition project: smart materials satellites.
Material as Experiment
What makes a material smart? How do materials influence our lives? How do we work with them in order to shape our present and future? Questions pertaining to the significance and processing of materials were already being addressed at the historic Bauhaus. Now, almost 100 years later, the exhibition smart materials satellites. Material as Experiment in the Stahlhaus on the Dessau-Törten housing estate, built as a material experiment by the Bauhauslers in 1926/27, focuses on the latest research into materials.

Open workshop: Theatrical fabric
Weaving. Knotting. Connecting.
18.10., 25.10., 1.11., 8.11.
ages 8 –14
How do fabrics sound? Can patterns, surface, colour and structure of the fabric be translated into music? And how can we transfer materials into movement or light? We will try it out together. Starting from a tapestry created in the weaving workshop of the historical Bauhaus, we want to trace the textile material. Our discoveries will result in a performance of movement: "Theatrical fabric".
In four workshops we approach step by step a staging of the material through our bodies in space. In addition, there are introductions to the exhibition Craft becomes Modern. The Bauhaus in the Making in material science, notation, video and audio technology, dance and performance. In a playful way, the design principles of weaving craftsmanship will be experienced and explored through sound, space and physical movement.
The open workshop is an accompanying programme for children and young people to the exhibition Craft becomes Modern and is supervised by the curatorial workshop.
Meeting point: Visitor Centre Bauhaus Dessau
Gropiusallee 38, 06846 Dessau-Roßlau

Object Lab: Tools for the Design Revolution
Tools are a metaphor for making by yourself. What tools do designers use today? And what role do they play in the design revolution? The tools of the design revolution illustrate the role of design in shaping a future of solidarity. The industrial designer Marco Kellhammer presents practical tools that are a basis for design decisions and empower people to put knowledge of materials and production in the context of future development.

Symposium: Material as Experiment
with experts from the fields of science and art
At the end of the exhibition period materials experts from the fields of sci-ence, art and design will present their various research results and will again enter into an open dialogue. What does man do with materials? Why is “mate-rial” currently a focal point in the sciences and in design? In what way can these disciplines benefit from the knowledge transfer from materials re-search?
Bauhaus Residency final presentation: Andrea Canepa and Amor Muñoz
For six weeks Andrea Canepa and Amor Muñoz lived and worked in the Masters' Houses. In her works, visual artist Andrea Canepa transfers modern architecture to new areas and develops a floor installation inspired by the Bauhaus stage. Amor Muñoz, an artist, experiments in her textile works with a kind of binary code that is readable to everyone. At the end of their Bauhaus Residency, the artists present a selection of their works.

Materials Week #3
Industrially produced piezo elements are multifunctional ceramics with many exciting characteristics. The material can, for instance, produce small amounts of energy or oscillate so fast that the vibrations can be heard. The workshops in the third Materials Week will introduce experts and amateurs to the piezo effect. In sound experiments materials will be made to chime. The week will end with a presentation and an expert’s lecture on the topics of sound and material.
