The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation was formed in 1994 as a non-profit foundation under public law. The foundation is sponsored by the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, the federal government commissioner for culture and media, and the city of Dessau.
The organs of the foundationn are the board of directors, the committee and the academic advisory body.

The foundation council is composed of the following:
- The ministry of culture for the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt
- The ministry of construction and transport for the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt
- The ministry of agriculture and the environment for the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt
- The federal government commissioner for culture and media
- The federal minister for transport, construction and urban development
- The chief burgomaster of the city of Dessau
- The mayor of the city of Dessau
- The council passes resolution on fundamental matters i.e. the budget, the election of the board of directors and the appointment of the director. The members of the foundation council administer their duties on an honorary basis.
The academic advisory body currently consists of the following members:

The academic advisory body advises the foundation council and the board of directors on academic and artistic matters:
on workshop projects in architecture, visual and performing arts, design and urban studies, on the collection, preservation, research and presentation of testimony on the development of the Bauhaus and its historic effect, on teaching and research tasks with national and international forums as well as the Bauhaus Kolleg. The advisory body consists of up to ten members that have excelled in the fields of academia or art. The members of the advisory body administer their duties on an honorary basis.
