stage studio
theatre workshop
The stage studio develops concepts for and realises own- and co-productions, which take up aspects of the historic Bauhaus stage and update these in the context of contemporary discourses in dance and performance art. International dancers, actors and musicians and artists, architects, urban planners and designers are invited to collaborate in the productions. In this way, the stage studio becomes a unique laboratory, which works on the development of concepts and ideas pertaining to the theatrical transformation of space. These refer equally to the origins of the Modern movement and to the contemporary cultural context. Methods of performance and concepts of spatial interpretation and production are developed in terms of an “interdisciplinary spatial theatre”, as seen in, for example, the 2008 production “record dances”. In 2009 again, the spectrum of projects ranges from performance and dance productions to installations, seminars and workshops, where the stage studio mediates its methods and approaches in collaboration with current project partners. The investigation of the productive interrelation of dance and architecture is central to this. Accordingly, the Bauhaus stage’s current own-production, “fluidum – energies of space creation” is dedicated to the “construction” of thematic spatial contexts and atmospheres with movement, sound and images. Various co-productions will also take place. Work will also continue of the installation series “Raummodelle” (spatial models) on the Bauhaus stage, which began in 2007.
Guest performances, festivals and the annual Bauhaus Colour Festival
The Bauhaus stage was a legendary project of modern theatre, and particularly so under Oskar Schlemmer’s leadership from 1921 to 1929 (in Dessau from 1926–1929) – a place for revolutionary experiments with body and space. Since the 1970s, these have enjoyed a gradual revival in dance, theatre and performance projects. Guest performances by innovative music, dance and theatrical ensembles will take place on the historical Bauhaus stage. In 2009, the stage studio will again curate the “Music at the Bauhaus” concert series and other guest performances by dance, performance and theatrical ensembles. Two festivals on the Bauhaus stage provide specific highlights: the Kurt-Weill-Festival in early March 2009 and the festival for dance and performance, “Figurenräume – Raumfiguren“, from 27th November to 5th December. The latter is a co-production by the Bauhaus Stage and the city of Dessau-Roßlau. The Colour Festivals held jointly by the city of Dessau-Roßlau and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation have finally become a tradition. The 12th Colour Festival on 5th September 2009 is devoted to the colour red and will pay homage to the Bauhaus master Oskar Schlemmer.
