25 Years UNESCO World Heritage Site Bauhaus

The Bauhaus and its sites in Weimar and Dessau were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 7 December 1996. The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation is using the 25th anniversary as an opportunity to report on the status of the architectural and historical debate surrounding the World Heritage Site. The event is dedicated to the challenges of monument preservation today and, in this context, presents the findings to date on the glass façade of the Bauhaus building in the workshop wing. It embodies par excellence the development of a new architecture with the then modern materials of steel, glass and concrete. Since the opening of the Bauhaus Building in Dessau in December 1926, the appearance of the glass façade of the workshop wing has undergone multiple changes: from its creation in 1926, the alterations in 1946 and 1965 to its restoration in 1976. For example, the questions will be addressed: What were the intentions behind the 1976 reconstruction? What has become of it? And what parallels are there to the original version?
