Although marginalized in the annals of art history for much longer, women in particular embodied a new spirit of freedom in the 1920s, the spirit of modernism. After all, the new constitution of the Weimar Republic in 1919 finally formulated equality between men and women. Implementation and a stronger presence of artistic works by women in the public were, however, a long time coming. In the years of the Bauhaus, i.e. from 1919 to 1933, there were 462 women at the Bauhaus – about one third, stable over the entire period: a surprisingly high number of female students, whose works only became publicly visible in the last decades.

"The Bauhaus was never a myth to me. It was a piece of GDR childhood," says filmmaker Anne Berrini, who grew up in Dessau, in her partly autobiographical documentary. In 2005, she went in search of Bauhaus photographers Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola. She followed their traces from Germany to Argentina and met friends, artists and researchers. The film questions the role of women, the genocide of indigenous peoples and the social perception between Europe and Latin America. Finally, the film journey leads to the New York Museum of Modern Art.

FrauenOrte – Frauengeschichte in Sachsen-Anhalt (Women's Places – Women's History in Saxony-Anhalt) is dedicated to conveying regional women's history and thus the life and work of women as an elementary part of the state's history. In Saxony-Anhalt there are more than 50 FrauenOrte, which are marked by information boards. Among them is the Bauhaus Dessau, because since the institution was founded in Weimar in 1919, women were also allowed to study at the Bauhaus. Even though subjects were initially divided along gender lines, "women's studies" evolved into a high-level design education that produced highly successful industrial products. (frauenorte.net)

Margarete, a timeless aging artist, lover of the Bauhaus and friend of all Bauhaus women, reflects on what Bauhaus actually means and how Bauhaus artists such as Marianne Brandt and Grete Stern helped shape the Bauhaus and also inspired her own career as a then still young artist. In doing so, she moves between reality and fiction, between scientifically proven facts and nostalgic transfiguration, between well-known and (still) unheard stories…
