The origin of tango as a global phenomenon
// Talk
Bauhaus Museum Dessau, Open Stage

Celia Millán in conversation with Michael Ihnow, Michael Zabel from the Tango Network Dessau and Dr. Debora Diehl (speech scientist).

In a time of great social upheaval, the tango established itself as a new dance style at the end of the 19th century, which connects it more with ideas of the historical Bauhaus than one might initially assume.

What distinguishes the tango from other dances and what makes it so special to this day? In this lesson, the tango experts will take us on a journey through the life and work of Astor Piazzolla, his sources of inspiration for the Tango Argentino Traditional, as well as through jazz and classical music.

To the music of Astor Piazzolla, founder of Tango Nuevo (1921-1992), Celia Millán developed a dance piece with new, electronic musical components, in which passionate movements motivated by tango rhythms meet the geometric-abstract spatial structure of the modular stage designed by Adolphe Appia. Both the tango as a dance and the Appia stage are reinterpreted.
Electric tango ballet, directed and choreographed by Celia Millán with the ballet of the Sorbian National Ensemble Bautzen and Michael Ihnow as well as videos by Héctor Solari and the Tango Misterio Orchestra.
