The connecting figures refer on the one hand to the project Xist*innen, which will be presented by Mikhail Lylov and others with Torsten Blume in November 2021 as a moving metabolistic laboratory on the Appia stage. They are conceptual characters that manifest an existential kinship between humans and all other living beings and habitats on earth. On the other hand, they are a reminiscence of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus festivals: in 1921, the first major Bauhaus festival – the Dragon Festival - took place in Weimar.
Just as the students of the Weimar Bauhaus walked with colourful dragon figures and abstract stick puppets from the school to the Ilmschlößchen restaurant – the actual site of the first Bauhaus festival – the connecting figures will parade through Dessau for the Bauhaus festival in 2021. By walking from the Bauhaus Museum, through the city park to the campus of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and to the mausoleum in the Georgium and finally to the historic Bauhaus building, they not only connect old and new Bauhaus buildings. They also point to the connection with partners in Dessau; not least with the Kurt Weill Festival taking place at the same time.

Speakers Corner and Reflection

For the first time at a Bauhaus festival, a place for discussion with artists and actors will be set up. Is there a more suitable place for this than the former pre-course room with its transparent corner?  Some of the talks will take place live with an audience in the room or as an online transmission.

The light artist Henning Schletter has staged the room under the title reflexion.
The light installation plays with the laws of geometric optics and makes use of the industrial mechanics of the glass façade to haptically involve visitors in the exhibition. By opening and closing the windows, rays of light are directed in different directions, resulting in ever new scenes and constellations. The special feature is the interplay between the manual movement of the windows by the audience on the one hand and computer-controlled spotlights on the other, which react to the orientation of the windows through interactive logarithms.
The room-sized installation was inspired by the regular ventilation of classrooms and other public spaces during the Corona pandemic, and also incorporates the mirrored objects in the permanent exhibition.

Fleeting, spherical sounds waft through the space and lure the visitor into the action. For the auditory experience, Ludwig Bormann a.k.a Jölüp uses field recordings, feedback loops and analog synthesizers to create a multi-layered ambience. www.soundcloud.com/jolup

Textile territories. A conversation

For the Bauhaus building and the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, the Berlin artist Judith Raum developed installations on textiles by the Bauhausler Otti Berger, in which expansive, painted fabric panels, large-scale reweavings of historical fabrics and video essays convey a new view of the textile products of the Bauhaus. This was preceded by years of research in international archives. In the conversation held near one of the installations, the focus is on the possibilities and challenges that artistic thinking and work face in a well-researched field such as the history of Bauhaus design and within an institution such as the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
