Figur und Grund. Vorlesungen von Heinz Hirdina, vol. 1
Heinz Hirdina (1942–2013) – design expert, editor-in-chief of the magazine form+zweck and lecturer at the Berlin-Weissensee School of Art – stands for a transdisciplinary perspective on the design history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Open to the contradictions of current design development, to the “simultaneity of the non-simultaneous”, Hirdina has been intensively engaged with the history and theory of design – always keeping the future in mind. His contextualizing perspective is manifested in his lectures, of which the volume Figur und Grund (Figure and Ground) is now available for the first time in a collected form: Fifteen lectures on outstanding designers of the 19th and 20th centuries and their designs have been reconstructed in this volume – a unique testimony, which not least of all reports on how thinking, teaching, modes of speech, interpretation and authorship influence the subject they deal with: design. Students, designers, design scholars and interested parties find in Hirdina’s lectures a unique combination in the discussion of the history and present of design: precise knowledge of materials, passion for design, persistent questioning, a high theoretical level and an understandable language characterize the texts published here.
