“I am calling it ‘The White Festival.’ Four-fifths white and one fifth color. This will be: ‘dappled, splotched, and striped.’”, wrote Oskar Schlemmer on 20 March 1926, shortly before the first Bauhaus Festival in Dessau. The costume party was not just a declaration of belief in the school’s new location; it also established a new public Bauhaus festival culture, which the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation revived in 1997 with the Colour Festivals. 25 years on from the first innovative Bauhaus Festival, it is time for another large celebration in the city.
The focus is on Schlemmer’s The Triadic Ballet, whose costumes were seen at the Bauhaus parties in the 1920s. In 2022, the ballet will be explored anew, starting in the Bauhaus Museum Dessau with Triadic Fictions including the performance (Untitled) Black Act by the New York-based artist Kia LaBeija and Triadic Insects by Hedwig Dances and the Art Institute Chicago. Following the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau’s open air on the market square and a procession through the city, the Bauhaus Festival will culminate on Saturday in and around the Bauhaus Building. One highlight of the festival site, which will offer music, performances, and installations as well as culinary treats, is the project Triadic Installation Map on the Bauhaus stage, in the workshop wing and the studio building, featuring PMD ART, contemporary circus artists, and others. The festival site will extend to the campus of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences for the Triadic Dance Club.
In cooperation with the City of Dessau-Roßlau, the Anhaltisches Theater, the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, and many other cultural players.
