PlexiTape Machine is a deliberate turn away from the possibilities of digital sound production and a reminiscence of the dominant sound storage medium of the 1970s to the 1990s: the magnetic tape. Loops are produced physically by cutting and pasting tape. Melodies result from manipulating the playback mechanism. The good old cassette player becomes an instrument. Johannes Till employs this elaborate reduction of means to create unusual, unique, handmade sound events for the silent films Ballet Mécanique (Fernand Léger, Dudley Murphy, 1924) and Opus I–IV (Walter Ruttmann, 1921).
