Somafco and Dakawa are two camps in Tanzania that, with support from international organisations and the African National Congress, offered education and a temporary home for young South Africans fleeing the apartheid regime. These were not just testing grounds for the development of a new society that would defeat the spectre of racial segregation, but also examples of the collaboration of East and West during the Cold War era in the spirit of international solidarity and the anti-apartheid movement. The Bauhaus Lab will research the different perspectives on these settlements, which were places of both exile and liberation, in collaboration with researchers from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. They will pool their findings in an exhibition in the Bauhaus Building.
