Bauhaus Taschenbuch 12: Bauhaus Lab 2013. Architecture after speculation

Spain’s empty apartments, idle infrastructures and massive landscape consumption are merely the manifestations of an urbanisation model that has triggered a speculative building boom worldwide since the 1990s. The country thereby represents a specific example of neo-liberal urbanisation: Alongside the tourism industry, the real estate and financial economy and the associated building trade formed the central pillars of the national economy. The international Bauhaus Lab 2013 focused on this speculation-driven model of urbanisation. Starting out with design-based research in collaboration with tutors, initiatives and activists groups in Spain, the Lab’s participants have developed critical analyses and counter models that investigate the implications of such a form of urbanisation.
