For the Bauhauslers, movement was essential for creativity. The Open Workshop takes up this idea by inviting children and young people to design and build drawing machines or explore animated lines. There will be opportunities to experiment with diverse techniques and materials, design posters, print and bind books. The experiments are digital, analogue, colourful or minimal – the possibilities are virtually endless.

Exhibition: Carl Fieger. From Bauhaus to Bauakademie

Carl Fieger (1893–1960) made architectural history with his first building. The single-family house in Dessau (1924) remained an experimental building, but also contributed significantly to the endeavour to set new standards in housing construction. As an employee in the offices of Peter Behrens and Walter Gropius he was involved in creating iconic buildings like the Fagus Factory in Alfeld (1922-25) or the Bauhaus Building in Dessau (1925/26).

Carl Fieger left his mark on modern architecture. He had an eye for standardisation and later put his experience with prefabricated parts and new materials to use as a research assistant at the Deutsche Bauakademie, the German university of architecture in East Berlin. In 1953 he built the first prefabricated building in Berlin, which hid its construction method behind a traditional facade.

The exhibition highlights the complete oeuvre of the architect, designer and distinguished draftsman and rediscovers Fieger in his original drawings, architectural models and furniture – as a designer, who combines new standards with individual expression.
