The result – the Central Institute for Cardiovascular Research of the GDR Academy of Sciences – is presented in the Intermezzo with photographs, drawings and plans.

Together we develop an idea for the moving image. The digital space becomes a black box in which short clips are created and discussed. Mobile phones are used, as well as digital cameras or iPads. Without any prior knowledge, all participants use their own imagination to answer the following questions: What knowledge does our body have? How does our body show its knowledge and how can we express this in the moving image?

Winter Workshop: „moving & being moved”
For everybody from 10 to 16

Spending the holidays in a UNESCO World Heritage Site? In the historic Bauhaus – and not only in the famous preliminary course – the sensory and tactile possibilities of perception were taken up as central design issues. The human body itself became an instrument of experience and a means of artistic expression. In the workshops of the historic Bauhaus, people experimented, built, invented and tried things out.

This year, participants will have the opportunity to get to know many of these ideas, to build on them experimentally and to gain new perspectives. Various materials and techniques will be used to test experimental investigations in the context of space, figure and movement in the spirit of the historical Bauhaus. In the holiday workshop, the participants' craft and artistic skills are explored and developed together with designers.

This workshop teaches simple, practical and original bookbinding basics. The focus is on techniques that can later be developed further by oneself without glue and with few tools. The aim is to understand how a hand-bound book is made in order to be able to apply this knowledge creatively. We will start with an overview of materials, tools and vocabulary. Then we fold, bind and design.

Workshop leader: Anne Deuter graphic designer and book artist / Leipzig

Out of the Display Case:
The Buchenwald Chair by Franz Ehrlich

Because of his commitment as an anti-Fascist, Bauhaus member Franz Ehrlich (1907-1984) was imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp. Here, in the site office, he was ordered to design utility objects and furniture for the SS, acting there in the grey area between resistance and collaboration. After his release from the concentration camp, Ehrlich was employed in the SS as an architect, at first in Buchenwald, later in Berlin.

One of Ehrlich’s chairs from this time is on display in the museum exhibition. What can this chair tell us about the correlation of Bauhaus and Buchenwald, these symbols of two utterly disparate formations of the modern era? Launching out from the chair as impetus, the design theorists Friedrich von Borries (HFBK Hamburg) and the historian Jens-Uwe Fischer (HFBK Hamburg) will address Ehrich’s problematical history, discuss the connection between modern design and Nazi politics and pose the quite fundamental question: “What can we learn from Ehrich’s path through life, for us, for our time and for our society?”
