Passages Bauhaus – City Installations in the Public Domain

Artistic interventions that play with the spatial connection of the Bauhaus and the city.

A dot becomes a line and the line becomes a surface. Students of the Peter Behrens School of Arts in Düsseldorf start with Wassily Kandinsky’s movement study, combine it with choreographies by William Forsythe, and create on this ground three dimensional objects in the city’s public domain.

The project Passages Bauhaus – City  invites visitors of the Bauhaus centenary 2019 to experience the stretch of way between the Bauhaus Building, via the main station and the Anhaltische Theater to the Bauhaus Museum Dessau in an interactive way.

> Bauhaus Museum Dessau

There’s no denying the similarities between Gerhard Marck’s Sintrax coffee machine and chemistry lab apparatus. Taking this as the starting point, modern coffee machines are examined more closely – and at the same time coffee, a beverage that is produced and con- sumed with ever greater frequency today, is discussed along with the impacts this has.

Museum exhibits require a certain distance, which is why they are behind glass. Many of the items in the exhibition are now part of everyday life. What makes these objects fit to be museum exhibits? And how do they relate to our lives today? The Out of the Display Cases series gets visitors closer up. It fosters talks between visitors and objects, with a bearing on everyday experiences today.

Admission free.

Bauhaus: 100 years of influence in Chile

10:00 Uhr

On Thursday, 10 October 2019, a group of Chilean female researchers will be guests at the Bauhaus Dessau to talk about the influence of the Bauhaus in Chile.

From the very beginning, the Bauhaus was a global phenomenon: the school took on various cultural influences, teachers and students from all over the world came to Weimar, Dessau and Berlin to change the world by design. With the dispersion of the Bauhauslers through flight, expulsion and exile after the closure of the Hochschule für Gestaltung under the pressure of the National Socialists, the ideas and creative approaches of the Bauhaus spread to all continents in the most diverse cultural and political contexts.

On Thursday, 10 October 2019, a group of Chilean researchers will be guests at the Bauhaus Dessau to talk about the influence of the Bauhaus in Chile. In five short lectures, visitors will be able to learn, through objects and numerous examples, how the legacy of the Bauhaus still has an effect on Chilean architecture and design today and what contemporary developments it is experiencing. The lectures by Bernardita Brancoli, Daniel Maulen, Mario Rojas, Sebastián Escalona and Fernando Portal will be held in English. The event begins at 10 am and ends at 12 noon in the Vorkursraum of the Bauhaus Building in Dessau, Gropiusallee 38, 06846 Dessau-Roßlau. Admission is free.
An event in cooperation with the Ministerio de las Culturas, las Artes y el Patrimonio Chile, the Bauhaus University Weimar and the Goethe-Institut.

Reading series: Die Anhaltische Landesbücherei zu Gast im Bauhaus

Anyone who moves through Dessau's inner city in the centenary year can experience Bauhaus history as they pass by. The open space exhibition "Invisible Places" marks buildings and places where Bauhaus people lived, worked and enjoyed their leisure time between 1925 and 1932. Starting from the KulturKiosk on the market square, the open-air exhibition takes visitors back to Dessau in the 1920s.

The catalogue not only provides very vivid and lovingly designed information about all the stations, but also about the Bauhaus period in Dessau.

Elisabeth Kremer is a Research Associate at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

Moderation: Prof Dr Peter Bernhard
