In 2021 artists are yet again moving into the Masters’ Houses in Dessau to live and work for three months like the Bauhaus Masters before them. Exhibitions in the Gropius House will deal with the annual theme of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation infrastructure in unique ways.

The exhibition highlights, for the first time, the interplay of design theory and exhibition practice. It presents past exhibitions by the school itself as well as commissioned exhibitions, which were conceived by the HfG Ulm between 1953 and 1968 and shown at home and abroad.

Bauhaus Museum Dessau, Black Box

Based on studies at the Dessau Bauhaus, Hilberseimer developed a kind of ecological urbanism that envisaged an interrelation of city and landscape: the New City. The exhibition will highlight different aspects presenting the first results of a Bauhaus Dessau Foundation research project at work on a critical edition of Ludwig Hilberseimer’s The New City.

A very special nativity scene by T. Lux Feininger will be exhibited for the first time together with Christmas graphics, postcards, photographs and abstract compositions by the Bauhaus student and a carving by his father Lyonel Feininger.

Bauhaus Building

The exhibition of the Bauhaus Lab 2021 connects a herbarium from 1930, which can now be found in the Kreismuseum Bitterfeld, with public debates on forest dieback, nature conservation, air pollution and growing environmental awareness. It makes it possible to experience the relationship between ecology and economy, which was already a topic of discussion and debate at the historic Bauhaus in the industrial region of central Germany.

In the film workshop with Jos Diegel, participants will produce their own experimental films – without the use of camera or sound technology, only 35mm film strips processed by hand. Film strips are painted, engraved, pasted, edited and remounted with pens, brushes, paints, spatulas, scissors, adhesive pictures, Letraset and film cutting equipment.
