100 years of Bauhaus in Dessau.
In 2019, Germany will be celebrating the centenary of the founding of the Bauhaus, together with many partners. Founded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus had its heyday in Dessau between 1925 and 1932, before it was closed in 1933 under the pressure of the Nazis by its last director Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Berlin.
In Dessau the Bauhaus Centenary is an occasion for a year of celebration.
It was a spirit of departure that attracted the Bauhauslers from Weimar to the industrial city of Dessau. All three directors of the Bauhaus – Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer und Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – lived and worked in Dessau. During these seven years in Dessau, they coined the image of the Bauhaus today, and turned the city into an internationally renowned domicile for the modern avant-garde.
For the centenary the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and the City of Dessau–Roßlau host a diverse programme, developed by a network of local, national and international partners, friends, students, artists and guests. The programme is an invitation to discover the experimental character and state of the art of the Bauhaus ideas for today.
The centenary will be celebrated Germany-wide by the Bauhaus Association 2019. A calendar with the programme of partner institutions here
