After the leaving of Marcel Breuer, Josef Albers ran the carpentry workshop from 1928 to 1929, where, in addition to commissioned works, he experimented with affordable furniture models and re-examined the question of functionality from a social point of view. In the process, the Bauhaus students search for possibilities of use and design for new materials, such as plywood or laminated wood.

An early result of these experiments is the armchair ti 244 by Josef Albers, which he designed as early as 1926, but which will probably not be produced until 1929: a chair made of four curved strips of laminated wood connected by two steel tubes – they give the chair the necessary stability – plus an upholstered seat and backrest. This self-assembly furniture could be easily packed and transported in a flat cardboard box.

During his Bauhaus period, Josef Albers repeatedly designed furniture in a simple, functional formal language, including two other similar armchairs. Later, Albers did not concern himself with furniture design and is still little researched as a furniture designer – a desideratum. Remarkable in Josef Albers' oeuvre is his versatility, which is reflected in his designs of design objects made of glass, furniture, glass paintings, type design and pictorial works.
