“it would be a mistake to believe that the aim of rationalising the construction industry is simply to improve existing construction production in economic terms, not socially.”

Walter Gropius, 1930

The Konsum Building was built in 1928 together with the last houses of the first construction phase of the Dessau-Törten Housing Estate according to the designs of Walter Gropius. With its five storeys, the building clearly towers above the settlement houses and marks the centre of the estate. The name refers to the function and the client: The Konsumverein für Dessau und Umgegend E.G.M.B.H. It operated a grocery and colonial goods shop in the low-rise building as well as a bakery with a small café. The following three floors of the building contain one apartment each and the top floor served all parties of the house as laundry room and roof terrace. In the yard there were small garden plots for self-catering.
