Construction and Building Department
and Building Research Archive
From building research to building conservation and reconstruction
The building department is responsible for all the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation’s architectonic and constructional interests. These range from the maintenance and conservation of the local Bauhaus buildings and the development of rebuild projects for mediation purposes to collaboration on national and international projects in connection with Bauhaus architecture. In addition, the building department acts as a building contractor for the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation: From needs assessment through to project development and project management, everything falls into place here – as is currently the case in the context of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau.
A further objective of the department is to pursue the ongoing scientific research into the Bauhaus Building and other modern buildings. The resulting building research archive with its collection of original artefacts and building components dating from the modern building period is one of a kind. Central to all construction activities at the Bauhaus is a cultural mission: Based on the existing history, the aim is to record all ‘parts‘, deduce their relevance, consider their topicality and future relevance and shape in turn a new ‘whole’.
