Kandinsky/Klee Master House
Restoration 2017-2018

The semi-detached house, built by Walter Gropius in Dessau in 1926, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The ensemble of the Masters' Houses is an outstanding architectural achievement of the Bauhaus. The cubic buildings document the aspiration for typification of the building by using identical elements paired with the highest architectural quality. The Masters' Houses are also of particular importance as places of residence and work for the world's outstanding artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, who shaped the interior of the houses, even in contrast to Walter Gropius' ideas.

After intensive use over the past 20 years, a thorough renovation is necessary in order to preserve the house as a Bauhaus heritage in the long term and to convey the special quality of this architecture to the public. The measures include work on securing and repairing the building fabric and technical equipment, restoring the historical space situation and revising the special colour and surface design.

After the measures have been completed, the Kandinsky/Klee Master House will give visitors the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere in the houses and experience the life of the Bauhaus masters in the surroundings they created themselves.

In cooperation with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, the Wüstenrot Foundation carries out the repair work. The Wüstenrot Foundation works directly in the fields of conservation, science, research and education, art and culture. Funding will be provided as part of the monument programme in the years 2017-2018 (closure of the Master’s House 2018).
