The importance of new digital media is growing and nevertheless film, as a historically evolved and still very effective art form, plays a central role in the culture industry. But can a film change the world? Probably not. But a film can describe the world, make people aware of problems and point out marginalised perspectives. The film week at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau shows such films and invites to discussion.

Für Sama, 2019

In Germany, "For Sama" was the opening film of the Human Rights Film Festival Berlin 2019. The film is structured as a love letter from Waad al-Kateab to her daughter Sama and shows life in Aleppo during the civil war in Syria. As the city falls into shambles around her, Waad falls in love with Hamza, marries him and gives birth to their daughter Sama together. While Hamza almost single-handedly keeps his hospital running, Waad, a budding journalist, films everything that happens around her.

Tee im Harem des Archimedes, 1985

The autobiographical "Tea in the Harem of Archimedes", with a predominantly amateur cast, was one of the first and best films in its genre. Far from the usual clichés, Charef tells the story of a friendship with a lot of humour and a great feeling for the attitude to life in the notorious Parisian suburbs, without raising a cautionary finger.

The film is about an older woman who falls in love with a younger Moroccan man and marries him. Fear Eats the Soul won, among others, critics' awards at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival and the German Film Award in Gold for Brigitte Mira as Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Vom Bauhaus nach Argentinien, 2020

In this documentary, filmmaker Anne Berrini, who grew up in Dessau, follows in the footsteps of the two Bauhaus photographers Grete Stern and Horacio Coppola, leading from Dessau to Berlin, finally to Argentina and present-day New York. An autobiographical view – both contemporary and critical – of a familiar place and its global impact based on historical correspondence and film footage from a research trip through Argentina in 2005. The film is preceded by an introductory discussion between filmmaker Anne Berrini and Burghard Duhm (Bauhaus Dessau Foundation).

"Out of Nowhere" is a 2017 feature film by Fatih Akin, a German-French co-production inspired by the 2004 nail bomb attack in Cologne by the National Socialist Underground (NSU) terrorist cell. Diane Kruger plays a mother who loses her German-Kurdish husband and son in a bomb attack. When the right-wing extremist perpetrators are acquitted in court due to lack of evidence, she searches for the perpetrators, who have fled in the meantime, in order to carry out vigilante justice.
