Friends of the Bauhaus
The Bauhaus delights a great many people from all over the world. It is a place of the avant-garde, of radical thought, open-mindedness and curiosity and of a collective, creative coexistence. The Bauhaus remains an icon of international architectural and design history to this day.
The Foundation is supported in its work by a friendship association.
Kreis der Freunde des Bauhauses e. V. (Friends of the Bauhaus)
It was Walter Gropius himself who campaigned to set up this association in 1924, in order to ease the financial burden on the school, then still in Weimar. A trustworthy group evolved with a board of trustees including, among others, the architect Peter Behrens, the painter Marc Chagall, the composer Arnold Schönberg and the author Franz Werfel.
The association is now full of vitality once again; its members have been associated with the Bauhaus Dessau for many years.
At the annual meeting, the members elected the former cultural secretary of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Jan Hofmann is a proven expert on cultural and educational policy and was the spokesman of the GDR's Round Table. The members also thanked Dr. Christoph Stölzl as chairman of the circle of friends. The internationally renowned historian is a nephew of Bauhaus master Gunta Stölzl and represented the Friends of the Bauhaus since 2013.
The Board is composed of: Ingeborg Arnold, Florian Bolenius, Dr. Jan Hofmann (Chairman), Saskia Lange, Joachim Liebig, Wolfgang Maas, and Dr. Barbara Steiner as Director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.
