“The Man Who Was Thursday.”
T. Lux Feininger

20 Oct 2022 – 26 Feb 2023

Bauhaus Museum Dessau, Black Box

Theodore Lux Feininger (1910–2011) has come to be known primarily as a Bauhaus photographer. However, the Intermezzo shows that, early on, he also regarded himself as a painter. During his studies at the Bauhaus, Feininger illustrated Gilbert Keith Chesterton’s political satire The Man Who Was Thursday, which takes an absurdist look at the pain, tragedy, delight, and humour inherent to creative thinking. In this early work, he uniquely combined his experiences with the Bauhaus stage and his ambitions as a visual artist. Partly because of this, many of his illustrations look like set designs. For the first time, these illustrations can be exhibited together with preparatory sketches.

The Intermezzo was enabled by a long-term loan from the estate of T. Lux Feininger through his son Conrad Feininger.
