How do old people live. The Henry and Emma Budge Home in Frankfurt am Main

29 Oct 2020 – 21 Mar 2021
Bauhaus Museum Dessau, Black Box

This Intermezzo takes a closer look at a question that was largely neglected by Neues Bauen (new building): the life and living conditions of older people. Thanks to funding by the foundation of the Jewish banking family of Emma and Henry Budge, in 1928 Das Neue Frankfurt, led by Ernst May, announced a competition for a new building: A retirement home for Jewish and Christian residents of the “educated middle classes” was to be built. The architects Mart Stam, Werner Moser and Ferdinand Kramer won the competition. Mart Stam’s participation meant that the project was also incorporated into the lessons of the Building Department at the Bauhaus in 1928/29. In 1930/31, Ella BergmannMichel produced a documentary about the home on behalf of Mart Stam.
