The last stage work of Oskar Schlemmer, the former Bauhaus master who was ostracized under the nationalist dictatorship, was the Lackballett (lacquer ballet), which he created in 1941 within the protected framework of the Herberts Wuppertal paint works. Its premiere on 6 December 1941 in Wuppertal was to remain the only performance until 2019.

The Düsseldorf music theatre ensemble THEATER DER KLÄNGE took the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus in 2019 as an opportunity to examine Schlemmer's work, reinterpret his idea and bring it to performance with the means of modern technology. Starting point are the figurines designed by Oskar and his brother Carl Schlemmer for the Lackballett, but also the sculptural movement approaches and choreographies known from Schlemmer's material and figurine dances.

Since its foundation in Düsseldorf in 1987, the music and dance theatre ensemble THEATER DER KLÄNGE has developed new approaches to multimedia stage forms and is present throughout Germany and internationally with guest performances. The Lackballett is embedded in an interactive video scenography and acoustic live electronics and thus becomes an intermedial experience that succeeds in bridging the gap between classical modernism and the digital present. Light painting, figurine dance and sound combine to create a rush of sound, colour and movement that is both a tribute to and a further development of Oskar Schlemmer's world of ideas and stage art.

The THEATER DER KLÄNGE has been operating its artistic office, workshops and rehearsal studio in Düsseldorf-Pempelfort since 1991. It is continuously supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Düsseldorf and the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia. The production of Lackballett was supported by the Cultural Office of the City of Düsseldorf, the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Fonds bauhaus100 in the West, the Stiftung van Meeteren, the Bürgerstiftung Düsseldorf and the Förderverein Klangtheater e.V..
