The Open Studio Mainz is a collaboration between the Q+ course of studies at Johannes Gutenberg University and Kunsthochschule Mainz. The project is conceived as an investigation of the interaction between concepts of learning and the production of spaces. Following Pierre Bourdieu, Habitat is understood here as the aesthetic form of space that shapes the way we act and feel and, consequently, teach and learn in space.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Open Studio Mainz will be realized in two phases. In the first phase, the group will visit the Bauhaus Buildung and the Bauhaus Museum Dessau in July to gain first impressions of the school’s history and the connections between the design of the building and the pedagogical approaches to teaching. In the second phase, students will be conducting arstic research projects exploring the relationships between different concepts of learning and the aesthetic forms of spaces. These projects manifest themselves in material experiments, in the form of objects, performances, and interventions in the Bauhaus building. The artistic production follows the premise that each understanding of teaching-learning processes produces its own learning space.
