The presentation of the collection of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau includes a replica of a visually striking sculpture. The original of this so-called equilibrium study was created in 1924 by the student Irmgard Sörensen-Popitz as a project for the preliminary course of László Moholy-Nagy. Söre Popitz, as the artist and commercial graphic designer later called herself, studied at the Bauhaus only briefly. Her life of ninety-seven years spanned nearly the entire twentieth century.
The history of this object is embedded in a description of the phases of her life and creative work. Steffen Schröter, who works in the image archive of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, also sheds light on other objects in the collection, the background of the preliminary course at the Bauhaus, various places, and other people who intersected with Söre Popitz’s life in era marked by tensions and rifts.
