Bauhaus Festival

Celebrate like Bauhauslers!
The Bauhaus’ parties were no less legendary than its pioneering architecture. The annual festivities served not only as means of community building in the sense of Gropius’ Manifesto, according to which the gatherings should encourage the “establishment of a cheerful ceremonial”; they simultaneously showcased the experimental, artistic work of the Bauhauslers to the outside world. Guests from Berlin through to Leipzig streamed to the Bauhaus Dessau for a single evening and were captivated by remarkable productions, costumes and performances.
The Bauhaus Dessau Foundation revived this tradition in 1997 and now invites guests to a major Bauhaus Festival once a year. With experimental installations, performances, readings and a wealth of live music by regional, national and international artists, the festival has long been a permanent fixture of cultural life in Dessau and attracts around 5,000 visitors every year from far beyond the city limits. The respective annual theme of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation provides a point of departure for the content of each festival.
