Global Modernism Studies
The aim of the Bauhaus Lab is to create an interdisciplinary research community which addresses a topic from the field of global modernism over a three-month period. International career entrants and postgraduates from the fields of architecture and design as well as young curators and design researchers can apply. The eight participants are selected by an international jury.
Each Bauhaus Lab focuses on a modern design object that simultaneously serves as a thematic anchor and starting point for the collective mission of research. The programme is held in English and is free of charge. At the end of the three-month period the findings will be presented in the framework of a joint exhibition at the Bauhaus Dessau.
Bauhaus Lab 2019
Out of the Suitcase: A Dispersed Collection
12 June – 9 September 2019
In 1936 Marcel Breuer, who had emigrated to London the year before, designs a table for the Isokon Furniture Company. The table was bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Gilbert and Winifred ‘Mainie’ Cousland, authors of progressive children’s books and Breuer’s neighbours in the Lawn Road Flats. It is now part of the comprehensive collection of Bauhaus objects held by the V&A.
The Bauhaus Lab will study selected objects from this collection and research the provenances and migration movements, exhibition careers and historiographies in which they have played a part. The research findings will be presented in an experimental exhibition in the Bauhaus building, and constitute a contribution to the conference “Collecting Bauhaus” taking place in December 2019.
Young professionals of architecture, design, curatorial praxis and art and design history are invited to apply. Participation is free and all participants will be provided with workspaces at the Bauhaus Dessau. Up to eight participants will be selected by an international jury.
To apply, please send a CV, a portfolio and a letter of interest (in English) to the programme head Dr. Regina Bittner at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation by April 15, 2019: firstname.lastname@example.org
