Open Studio Sydney

Radical Hospitality
A post-otherness intervention for future migrant cultural projects and accommodation facilities
20 . – 24 . 6 . 2016
This Open Studio explored methods and material aspects of the design history of the Bauhaus Dessau using contemporary strategies. The investigation of the meaning and material requirements of a “simple life” began with the famous photo Interieur (Interior) by Hannes Meyer.
On this basis the students were tasked with planning a spatial intervention based on a subjective critical interpretation of Jacques Derrida’s lecture Of Hospitality and to integrate this in the Steel House, which was designed by Georg Muche and Richard Paulick and built in 1926/27. The objective was to develop a radical hospitality concept with regard to interior and spatial design, based on a performative and scenographic paradigm that apprehends culture per se as performance and activates space through internal activities.
