Mervyn Groot

February – March 2016

As a percussionist and composer Mervyn Groot thinks modern music is a matter for a collective of artists. For Groot the residency presents a welcome opportunity to pursue music and composition as an experimental arrangement. While working on his composition, Groot built his own distinctive musical instrument in the wood workshop. He played this in his performance, adding to it elements of the architecture of the Moholy-Nagy master’s house. In doing so the musician moved not only to and fro between the historic Bauhaus and his contemporary reflection, but also, in the finest tradition of the Bauhaus, crossed the boundaries between the genres of music, design and architecture.
