Clemens Krauss

20 March–23 May 2017

Clemens Krauss (*1981, lives in Berlin) is a working artist qualified in the natural sciences and the arts. He combines what he has experienced and learned in these fields in his work. His point of departure is the human being, the human body, the individual and the interactions of the individual, because together individuals lead to society, to social interaction. Krauss is interested in society as a sphere of political influence and action. He states: “Wherever you find society […] you also find all kinds of friction and provocative stuff happening. That says a lot about the time we’re living in, in fact from a global and transnational perspective, and that’s the starting point for my work.”

From an interview with Clemens Krauss:
Which aspects of your work are important to you?

I value exaggeration, humour, criticism and symbolism. Sometimes, disgust can also have an interesting effect. Aesthetics also play an important role, the way I use oil paint especially is very carnal, lustful, sexual, and absolutely physical. Apart from the fact that the oil paint naturally also contributes to the two or three dimensionality at play in the painting. When is a painting a painting, and when is it a sculpture? That’s a question I’m often asked because of the three-dimensional way I use paint, like a sculptural material.
