Energy Avantgarde Anhalt (EAA)
The Energy Avantgarde Anhalt is
- a scheme that provides a second mainstay to the energy turnaround: regional added value.
- a network of stakeholders in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld-Wittenberg region and beyond who are actively engaged in a future-conversion of their energy systems and design the necessary technical, economic, socio-cultural and political changes in the process. The network is open to all proactive associates who are willing to commit themselves to the shared target and contribute their competences.
- an overall concept for the energy-turnaround transition process in the post-market entry promotion phase for renewable energies.
- a self-commitment which is being defined in a participatory process.
The Anhalt-Bitterfeld-Wittenberg region is proactively facing the most urgent issue for the future: the energy turnaround is becoming a turning point in regional energy policy.
Besides its strong tradition of Reform(ation) and Modernity, the main features of this region – its present-day economic, scientific and technical, and cultural potentials – make it ideally suited for taking on a pioneering role in societal transition towards post-fossil energy supply.
Major municipal, business, academic, cultural and civil-society stakeholders in Anhalt region (composed of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Wittenberg rural districts and Dessau-Roßlau urban municipality) committed themselves to the objective of a regional energy turnaround development strategy.
Establishment of a regional electricity system with increasing use of renewable energy resources which will necessarily change heat/cold supply and mobility behaviours and strengthen regional added value.
Development of Ferropolis – an epitome of the history of fossil fuels energy and the post-fossil future – into an experimental and presentation site of outstanding innovations and an encounter and exchange centre between committed (energy) technicians striving for improvements in energy efficiency and use of regenerative energies and the cultural community.
Provision of education, tourism, participation and communication offers in order to reinforce the socio-cultural environs for the entailed profound changes aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the regional population.
The transition to future-oriented energy management requires cutting-edge scientific and technical achievements, precision and creativity plus new economic instruments and regulations which cannot be brought about without socio-cultural changes and democratic negotiatory and participatory processes. Issues of how to shape integrated development processes will have to be dealt with as well as such relating to aesthetic product and spatial design.
The complexity of the underlying change does not permit simplistic approaches but rather needs trans-sectoral, long-term oriented action into which the multi-party interests can be integrated.
The Energy Avantgarde Anhalt operates as a regional and supra-regional research network and simultaneously as a real-time lab. The development of transformation strategies combined with assessments of concrete transformation processes will transpose the ‘energy turnaround’ at a local level into a stable post-fossil energyscape on various regenerative technologies and new divisions of tasks in decentralised prosumer networks. Thus, the region is provided in the transformation process with an option for the future as an energy region, a viable regional economic basis and prospects for European-wide and international cooperation schemes.
To this end, the registered association Energieavantgarde Anhalt e.V. (in formation) is organising communication and cooperation processes within the region and at inter-regional level. This includes research cooperation and model projects, efficient counselling of people and business regarding practical transformation decisions as well as supporting monitoring of the development process. The Energy Avantgarde Anhalt can rely on regional academic and societal resources as well as on supra-regional interest, willingness to support and curiosity among society at large about a strategy for reforms in the Anhalt region as a resilience region in the 21st century.
