Between the Aesthetic and Political Avant-gardes: Journal of the Communist Student Fraction (Kostufra) at the Bauhaus Dessau and Berlin 1930 – 1932

Online Conference
10 + 11 Feb 2022
>> Registration required

The efforts made by the German Communist Party (KPD) to gain influence in higher education institutions as well included the nationwide foundation of a communist student fraction (Kostufra) in Leipzig in 1922. One such cell, in which more than 20 students were active, evolved at the Bauhaus Dessau in 1927. They published their own magazine titled bauhaus. sprachrohr der studierenden. organ der kostufra. The students adopted an almost polemic stance on events and developments at the Bauhaus, in politics and society that reflected the KPD’s point of view. In the framework of the conference, academics discuss the leftist cultural politics of the Weimar Republic, the debates concerning the aesthetic and political avant-gardes of the time, and the ways in which these debates were received in postwar Germany (East and West).

The conference is part of the research project Bauhaus im Text of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, in which, among other things, a digital critical edition of the student magazine is being developed.
