Opening of the Appia Stage
with "Toccata 20"

24 + 25 Oct 2020
Bauhaus Museum Dessau, Open Stage

After one year of Rita McBride’s Arena, the Appia Stage will step in to occupy the ground floor of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau. In 1912/13, the Swiss stage designer Adolphe Appia, together with light artist Alexander Salzmann, designed and realised the proto type for a new open theatre stage for the Festspielhaus Hellerau. It consists of simple cubic modules that can be arranged in different ways like a building set. The historical Bauhaus considered it a model for scenographic projects. The Europäische Zentrum der Künste reconstructed it in 2017 at Festspielhaus Hellerau.

As an installation and event space on the ground floor of the Bauhaus Museum Dessau Appia will define the Open Stage until the end of 2021 and will be used by the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation as a stage. To realize this, the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation will be collaborating with many ensembles, international universities, and the Anhaltisches Theater in Dessau.

The Appia Stage at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau will be opened on 24 and 25 October 2020 with a programme in cooperation with the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau.

The corona virus has changed the artistic work in the theaters. Especially the dancers have been affected. Touching is prohibited, a minimum distance of six meters is prescribed. How do you touch in such times without touching? Stefano Giannetti, chief choreographer of the Anhaltisches Theater, pursues this question in the dance evening Toccata 20 with music by Claudio Monteverdi, Johann Sebastian Bach and others. The Open Stage at the Bauhaus Museum offers enough space for distance – between audience, dancers and musicians. But in its architectural openness it also offers space for a special gathering in a special place. Further performances: 25.10.2020, 4th + 5th + 25th + 26.11.2020, 16th + 18.12.2020, each at 8 pm.
