“In Dessau, children are born with a bicycle:” these were the words Nina Kandinsky used to introduce her new place of residence when she moved to Dessau with Wassily Kandinsky in 1925. Not only were many members of the Bauhaus enthusiastic cyclists, the bicycle city of Dessau also inspired the development of the most famous piece of furniture of the Bauhaus workshops, the Freischwinger or cantilever chair.
The lecture reports on how the development of tubular steel furniture was linked to the bicycle and the bicycle city of Dessau. Photographs from Dessau in the 1920s will be shown. In the second part, it takes a look at Dessau today and presents creative designs for a Bauhaus cycle path. They show how Dessau could live up to its reputation and once again become a widely known cycling city.
