From the very beginning, the historic Bauhaus wanted to design a built environment that supported people in their everyday activities and relieved them both physically and mentally. Housing played a central role in this. The connection between architecture, society and hygiene was researched and discussed, also by the communist students at the Bauhaus, who had been organised in the Kostufra, the communist student faction, since 1927. The Bauhaus student Chanan Frenkel (1905–1957), who was born in Halle, was close to the Kostufra and may have been a member himself. In his souvenir album of his time at the Bauhaus, there are excerpts from the Kostufra magazine, which was published by the students from 1930 to 1932.

The lecture explores the debates recorded there and places them in the context of architectural projects, especially those dedicated to housing, by teachers and students at the Bauhaus, not least by Chanan Frenkel himself, who later worked as an architect in Israel and also worked for medical institutions there.
