Based on Reinhold Rossig's design of a socialist city – a student work from Ludwig Hilberseimer's classes – and on Hilberseimer's own example, the lecture deals with the development of modern urban planning. Considerations of hygiene are an important aspect of this. Shortly before Ludwig Hilberseimer came to the Bauhaus in 1929, he published his book Großstadtarchitektur (1927). With some of the projects published in it, such as the high-rise city, he became both famous and infamous, and they were criticised time and again. What is less well known is that he fundamentally developed his theories for a new city with his work at the Bauhaus in Dessau (especially on tanning) and formulated a kind of ecological urbanism with the publication The New City (1944) in American exile.
