In the spring of 1929, the city of Dessau, together with the Schultheiss-Patzenhofer Brauerei AG from Berlin, invited tenders for a restaurant. The new building, picturesquely situated on an Elbe dyke, was to mark the northern end of the city and replace a previous building that had become too small. None of the 21 designs submitted for the competition won first prize. The design by Carl Fieger, who had already achieved fame with the construction of his own residential building in the Bauhaus settlement of Dessau-Törten, was executed in 1930.
The Kornhaus not only perfectly rounds off the landscape of Bauhaus buildings in Dessau. Together with the neighbouring Leopoldshafen and the Elbe River Baths opposite, it also formed a unique ensemble of modern urban leisure culture.
