Future Textiles – Digital Crafts

Students of the weißensee academy of art berlin show the results of the semester project, which took place within the framework of the research project Textile Prototyping Lab. The focus was on combining traditional textile techniques with the potentials of "digital fabrication". Digital tools were explored as an extension of human manual skills and their role for a contemporary understanding of craft, design and technology was examined.

Schlemmer X Beats

Students of the Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart have transformed Oskar Schlemmer's spatially plastic costumes of the Triadic Ballet into a digital construction kit. Visitors can put together new figure variations themselves, which appear on a virtual, projected dance floor and dance to current pop music in an imaginary Schlemmer disco. They can also assemble figures from basic elements of Triadic Ballet from a construction kit produced in digital 3D printing, which are set up on a mechanical stage and set in motion.

Performer Roman Skadra will be carrying a huge, heavy red ball the whole time, wondering, "Do you have any idea what a heavy load I'm carrying?" This performance is a project of Squarehead Productions, a platform for artistic research and performance.
