Bauhaus Dessau

Art, party culture, dance, theatre, music – for the Bauhaus, these creative means of expression are a fundamental basis for teaching, learning and life at the Bauhaus. In the 1920s the stage is a legendary project of modern theatre, complemented by the no less legendary Bauhaus parties.

Oskar Schlemmer, Anni and Josef Albers, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Laszlo Moholy-Naggy, Lyonel Feininger and many others – the artistic avant-garde of the day lived together at the Bauhaus in Dessau. Life in the Masters’ Houses is lived openly in an artists’ colony.

Today once again, the Bauhaus in Dessau sees itself as a venue for theatre and the arts. In addition to processing the past, this is also specifically about contemporary adaptations and references, the aim being to convey that the Bauhaus was a school in which numerous artistic and creative influences converged. For Walter Gropius and his masters, this was programmatic.

The stage is therefore still an important item on the agenda in the Foundation’s work and with the Bauhaus Residency, which starts in 2016, contemporary art returns to the Bauhaus.
