Accommodation

Accommodation inside the studio building, so called “Prellerhaus”
The studio building was the first hail of residence in Germany to be integrated within a University. There were 28 rooms on four storeys, 16 of which had a small balcony facing east, the other 12 facing west towards the building. Their residents could also use the communal balconies in the south, which were reached via the small kitchens at the ends of the corridors. This part of the building is still called the “Prellerhaus” in remembrance of the Weimar period. In the 19th century, the landscape painter Friedrich Preller Senior provided a house for art students in Weimar, where many Bauhaus students later also lived. The move from the residential city of Weimar to the industrial town of Dessau was difficult for most of the students, and such reminiscence was more than welcome.
The studio flats were incredibly popular: Over 20 m2 for one person, with fitted furniture, a built-in bed, table, chairs and a washbasin too – at the time, this was pure luxury. There were showers, baths and a gym in the basement, and the roof terrace was open to all, and was used for exercise.
The studio building is, in terms of colour, particularly intriguing. Hinnerk Scheper’s idea of emphasising the form of the room with colour comes to the fore in the lobby. If one looks up through the centre of the stairwell, one can also see, as in the north wing, the differently coloured floors.
In 1930, Mies van der Rohe arranged for some of the studio flats to be combined to form classrooms, where, for example, Josef Albers taught the preliminary course and Wassily Kandinsky taught free painting. Further alterations followed, and the original fitted furniture has long disappeared. In 1989, showers were built in on each floor. Since their general renovation and refurbishment, the studio flats have been let to visitors to the Bauhaus.
